Occasions / The cake moment
Keto at a birthday party
Birthday parties come with two predictable tests: pizza or party food, then cake. Neither has to be a big deal. Eat beforehand if the menu is uncertain, and have a plan for the slice that will be offered to you.
The game plan
- If the food is likely to be pizza, eat a keto meal before you go.
- At a restaurant birthday, order like any other night out.
- When cake comes out, take part in the moment: sing, take photos, toast.
- Decide your cake answer in advance (see below).
- If you are close to the host, offer to bring a dessert everyone can eat.
Go for
- Wings and salads
Common at pizza parties. - Pizza toppings
If you must, eat the cheese and toppings and leave the crust. - Meat, cheese and vegetable platters
Often on the side table. - Berries with whipped cream
If there is a fruit platter.
Pass on
- Cake and cupcakes
Or have a single bite if you want it. - Punch and juice
Water or sparkling water. - Candy bags and chips
Walk past the table.
What to say
“It looks amazing. I’m all set, but I’ll take a photo of it.”
“I’ll have a coffee with the cake course.”
“I brought a cheesecake to share, if anyone wants a slice.”

Quick answers
Is it rude to say no to birthday cake?
Not if you are warm about it. Join in the singing and the toast, compliment the cake and say you are all set. Most people are focused on the guest of honor, not your plate.
