Where the carbs come from
Little or no sugar is added at bottling (under 3 grams per liter), so almost nothing is left but a trace of grape sugar.
The driest style, with almost no sugar.
How to order it
Look for “brut nature,” “zero dosage” or “pas dosé” on the label.
Sparkling, lowest to highest
Sparkling wine is labeled by how much sugar is added after the second fermentation (the dosage). The label word tells you almost everything, and it runs the opposite way to what you might expect: “extra dry” is sweeter than “brut.”
At a glance
Typical range for a standard pour. Carbs in drinks are mostly sugar, so net and total carbs are about the same.
The rule for sparkling
Brut nature and extra brut are the lowest. Brut is the safe default. Extra dry, dry, demi-sec and doux get progressively sweeter.
Carb ranges are approximate and vary by brand, recipe and pour. Alcohol can hit harder on a low-carb diet. Do not drink if pregnant or underage, and talk to your doctor about alcohol if you take medication or have diabetes. See our health disclaimer.
