Keto at the airport and on the plane
Airports sell pastries, pretzels and sandwiches at every gate, and planes serve crackers and cookies. Pack the basics, know what you can carry through security, and use the terminal restaurants for one real meal.
The game plan
- Eat a protein-heavy meal before you leave for the airport.
- Pack solid snacks: they go through security without a problem.
- Remember that dips, nut butters and spreads count as liquids at US security (3.4 ounces or less).
- At the terminal, look for a sit-down restaurant, a grill or a market with salads and cheese.
- On the plane, ask for water, sparkling water, black coffee or tea.
Go for
- Cheese, nuts and jerky you packed
Solid foods go through security. - Hard-boiled eggs
Fine through security; peel at home to save mess. - Breakfast eggs and bacon
At any terminal grill. - Cobb or Caesar salad without croutons
Add chicken or steak. - Burger without a bun
Airport burger bars will do it. - Cheese and charcuterie snack boxes
Skip the crackers and dried fruit.
Pass on
- Pastries, pretzels and wraps
Flour at every gate. - Yogurt parfaits
Sweetened yogurt and granola. - In-flight snacks
Usually crackers, cookies or pretzels. - Juice on the drink cart
Ask for sparkling water or tomato juice in a small cup.
What to say
“Could I have the salad with the chicken, no croutons and dressing on the side?”
Pack this
- Nuts and pork rinds
- Cheese crisps
- Jerky or meat sticks
- Hard-boiled eggs (for short trips)
- Empty water bottle to fill after security
- Electrolyte packets

Quick answers
Can I bring hard-boiled eggs through airport security?
Yes. Solid foods are allowed through US security. Spreads, dips and nut butters count as liquids or gels and must follow the 3.4-ounce rule. Rules differ for international arrivals, where fresh food often has to be declared or discarded.
