Keto on the night shift

Nurses, first responders, factory and warehouse crews and anyone working nights face a different version of keto: meals at odd hours, vending machines at 3 a.m. and a body that wants sugar to stay awake. Structure helps more than willpower.

The game plan

  1. Anchor your eating to your shift, not the clock: a real meal before work, one during, and a small one after.
  2. Pack everything; at 3 a.m. the only options are vending machines.
  3. Keep caffeine to the first half of your shift so you can sleep afterward.
  4. Drink water and use sugar-free electrolytes, especially in your first weeks.
  5. Keep the post-shift meal light so you can fall asleep.

Go for

  • A pre-shift dinner
Protein and vegetables, like any dinner.
  • Mid-shift meal you packed
Leftovers, salad with protein, lettuce wraps.
  • Small post-shift meal
Eggs, Greek yogurt or a handful of nuts.
  • Break-room backup
    Nuts, string cheese, hard-boiled eggs.

Pass on

  • Vending machine snacks
Nuts or pork rinds if you must.
  • Energy drinks with sugar
Choose zero-sugar versions or black coffee.
  • Treats left for the night crew
    Bring your own instead.

What to say

“I packed mine, thanks.”

Pack this

  • Insulated bag and ice packs
  • Two meals and a snack
  • Electrolyte packets
  • Water bottle

Quick answers

When should I eat on a night shift?

Many people do well with a full meal before the shift, a packed meal in the middle and a small meal after, then sleep. If you have a medical condition or take medication, ask your doctor about timing.
